Clay Play! Camp

June 18-22

July 23-27 (new projects and techniques!)

All ceramics will be explored; wheel throwing, sculpture, mugs, plates, bowls!

This reads: I love, enjoy, devoure, adore, and will never stop doing art!!!!  I hope she is looking forward to being Studio 4 Art's marketing department.
Clay play is always enjoyed by young and old.  Our philosophy in this camp is all about personal style and ideas.  In the beginning of each day, we introduce a new technique or approach in using clay, along with a challenge to build on the creative process.
What can you create with a boxed, hollow form?
The above picture does not show scale, these were created by using a tile as a template, 4x4 and 2x2.  From robots, to mice to jewelry and treasure boxes, all individually unique!  It is our style, no two should be alike, because we are all different!

Food + Art = Yummy fun!

June 11-15 Camp

August 20-24 (different projects will be created than those shown from first week.)

Most of our inspirations were our own, creating in clay, chalk pastels, detailed pencil drawings and paintings.  All inspiration was from foods we love.  It is always fun to play with your food!

This was our exercise before we played with our food.  Portraiture, placement, texture, shape, line and details all explored.
Personal style, excessively cute!
Blending, layering, shape, shade and definition assisted in creating our still life drawn with chalk pastels.  This drawing below is the beginning of an exercise that Studio 4 Art has all of its students exercise, which is training the eye to see like an artists sees.  Artists are the most observant people on this planet, I guarantee it!
Beginning to see like an artist, begins with closing your eyes and feeling the shape and texture.
Could she be any more focused!
On our last day of camp, as a treat and exercise to combine all that we have learned throughout the week...a study of a cupcake.  Then, we eat it!  This artist is so focused, looking at different colors in the frosting, the paper cup and the shadow.  Even to the little bits of chocolate on top!

The number one response I heard from parents, "Oh, my gosh.  I have to get this framed!"

Our First Student Art Show

Studio 4 Art is priviledged to work with many local school's offering After School Enrichment Art. We have just finished up our first 8 week course of the 2011-2012 school year and wanted to show off the student art that was created in our new addition, the Annex. We offered live music (compliments to the Magic Flute of Terra Linda for supplying!) and hors' deurves to set the mood for this special night. I love teaching these classes as the energy is always exciting and our usual full classes of 16 always offer a different experience every week! A special shout out too to our after school instructors: Marilyn Burkholder Creamer, Ann Gerard, and Susan Poer. And thank you also to the schools that welcome us in. This show was with 5 Novato California elementary schools; Hamilton Elementary, Pleasant Valley Elementary, Olive Elementary, Loma Verde Elementary and San Ramon!

With over 100 pieces of artwork, it was exciting to see the space come alive with color. The work looks amazing and the students have worked hard learning a lot of techniques while having fun and studying about Mr. Picasso.

Each session Studio 4 Art brings something new and exciting to students in our After School Enrichment programs. This session we studied and looked at Pablo Picasso, learning about his style, technique and what kind of art mediums he liked to experiment in. Students created a print using a foam plate while learning about Picasso's blue and rose period. They studied Picasso's cubist paintings looking at such work as "The Guitar Player". We took this idea and brought it to a new level of cubist painting. Beginning with acrylic painting (encompassing learning about composition and color mixing) student began their adventure with linear angled lines and then painted inside if this design. The next layer of this painting was to have the children fully explore the creative process by dividing their painting into pieces by cutting with scissors, to then put back together creating a completely different cubist type painting. We ended our session with clay and sculpture work. The emphasis in this exercise, continuing with Picasso, was how the artist loved to exaggerate features and figures, sometimes creating a more comic like piece and learning his reasoning for this exaggeration was in part due to perspective. The clay project is using clay that is a porcelain type clay and was fired in Studio 4 Art's kiln.

Studio 4 Art is very excited to have a space where we can let the students see their art work framed, hung and lit up. It gives them a sense of pride and accomplishment when their work is up for all to see. Looking forward to the next show in about 2 1/2 months.

Guess What!? Studio 4 Art is soon to open a shop in Novato!!

I don't think I could have envisioned my summer being so full. Not just with camps. But about 3 weeks ago I signed a lease for a retail space in Novato on Grant Avenue. So, as I am in my last week of camps, I am also (with the help of my, most awesome, husband) redesigning Studio 4 Art's website, signage, putting new schedules together, creating a "look and feel" for the new space, purchasing wheels, kilns, furniture, sewing machines, and art supplies. It is all very exciting, and may I say a bit overwhelming. But did I say exciting!

Let me tell you a bit about the reasons I began looking for a home for Studio 4 Art.

You all know I absolutely love what I do. And the response with after-school enrichment classes, private lessons, birthday parties, wedding events, etc. has been tremendous. But, at the same time I felt limited to what I could do, how many people I could involve in the creative process, and my limitations of reaching out further into the community. I wanted to introduce art to more people in an environment that was open, warm, cozy, fun, not intimidating and with work around them that would inspire them to experiment. A place that you just wanted to "hang-out" and create.

Another situation I kept thinking about was how many creative friends I have, how much beautiful work there is being created by local artisans and how much this inspires me. I am on the web as much as possible looking at work of others and thinking "I want to see this in person". My personality is one that has to see it, touch it and get a good appreciation of the work that went into whatever I may be looking at. In my research there is a limited amount of brick and mortar shops to go and buy handcrafted, handmade items (made in the USA), of high quality, and yet reasonably priced. Until NOW!

So, as my husband has pointed out. I am creating a space that encompasses the full circle of creativity. There is a space that allows, you to paint, draw, sew, wheel-throw, hand-build, create a mosaic, or anything else a child's mind may imagine (and adults too). Then there is the retail side that shows appreciation for the many talented people there are that often don't get the acknowledgment and support they deserve.

We will be having a Grand Opening on October 4th! More details to follow. However, if you are not on our email list, please do so. I want to go as "green" as possible and will be using the web for announcements, workshop/class schedules, special guests, craft evenings for adults, time out for parents (3rd Friday evening of every month we will "chill" with the kids while parents get time-out to have dinner, see a movie, or maybe even a chance to talk).

Please keep checking Studio 4 Art's blog and website for new information!

For anyone worried about Studio 4 Art continuing there work on-site and on wheels! NO NEED. Studio 4 Art will continue to have after-school enrichment classes, birthday parties and any other creative need you may have, wherever you may want them to take place.

Peace everyone. And remember that if you can envision your dreams, they will come true.
