2013 Art Workshops...yup, the whole year is posted and we aim to please


Workshops 2013
Pre registration required for all.  Minimum; 4 students.  To be paid in full.
You may receive a full refund if you cancel your class 14 days prior to the date of class. Cancellations with 13 days or less notice will incur a non-refundable materials and handling fee (refund amount depends on class)           

January
Beyond Monotype PrintMaking; 16-Adults
This intense, fun and creative workshop covers a wide range of techniques and marks possible in the monotype process and continues by adding collage, drawing, and multiple plates to create the final image. The notion of the "artist being able to create without boundaries for free creativity” is celebrated in this class.  It is about surprise, play, experimentation and having fun. Individual needs and desires helps to direct this workshop.
Using Akua inks (water based and non-toxic) and modifiers, participants will begin with basic monotype techniques including ink mixing, additive/subtractive applications, stencils/templates, while conquering plate and paper registration. Traditional elements will also be included looking at composition and color combinations to strengthen each piece.

Monday January 21st; Workshop for KIDS
Create works with the spirit of Valentines in mind.  It is a head start, making sure that clay and other beautiful items will be complete by February 14th.  Working on printmaking, ceramics + a choice of sewing projects.

Art/Craft Party Night for Women.
Bring your own tools and materials for a night of camaraderie, creative minds and a place to bounce ideas, brainstorm and have questions answered (really it is about hanging out and being creative).  Light refreshments will be accompanying our adult playtime.  Any and ALL mediums welcome!  It is the new “knitting circle”!

Come in on February 5th and we will give you a pound of clay to create a keepsake that will be a treasure forever.  And yes, we do encourage dogs to come and share their love too.

Bookmaking; 14-Adult
Our talented Carly, will share her passion of bookmaking while creating several different styles of bookbinding.  Basic techniques and stitches that you will need for any book will be taught.  Tools, materials, adhesives, traditional papers, creative papers as well as how to work with book cloth will be discussed.  Some of the fun you will have will be creating accordion style, single-sheet book, and pamphlet stitch will be the focus.  Although Studio 4 Art will have all supplies, please bring in any special paper or fabric that you would like to incorporate into your designs.

March
Relief printmaking; 14-Adult
Reliefs are created by carving away to leave a raised surface, that when inked, will print all but what was carved away.  Jenson, our talented printmaking artist, will show you how to print without a printing press, allowing you to continue your new love at home.  Traditional techniques include woodcut, metal cut, wood engraving, relief etching, and linocut.  This class will focus on linocuts.  Block and image preparation, carving tools, registration, execution, choosing inks, color combinations, and related topics will be the class objective.
Studio 4 Art will have all supplies.  We do highly recommend that you bring in a picture to get you started.  Jenson will show you how to transfer images onto your linocut surface.  Pieces created will be 8x10 on high quality cotton paper.

Introduction to Cyanotype Prints; 14-Adult
This workshop will demonstrate how to print using a traditional photographic process. Chemicals are applied to a surface (paper, wood, or even cotton) and left to dry. Once dry the surface becomes photosensitive and we will use digital negatives and the sun to create unique prints in a beautiful blue tone.  **Please bring images you would like to print on a flash drive, or email Studio 4 Art your images before the workshop,  so digital negatives can be made. All supplies will be available, but it is encouraged to bring other surfaces you would like to experiment printing on such as wood, interesting papers, or cloth.

Encaustics. Painting with hot beeswax; 16-Adult
Experimentation, playfulness, texture, and luminosity are just some of the reasons to love this medium.  Painting with hot beeswax has an element of surprise, intrigue and a bit of fire to get the adrenaline pumping.  Kebby will share her passion of encaustics, teaching techniques, sharing tricks, and talking about different surfaces, other mediums to use with the wax, how to draw, paint and print on surface as well as carving.  You will have all of the information needed to set up your own studio at home.
For continuing students, we will review techniques, then you will immediately be on your way to creating your paintings.  **please bring in special papers, old books, poems and other items to incorporate into your work that will create a piece of beauty and inspiration.

Mixed Media; 16-Adult
"Low tech" and non-toxic printing techniques that blends silkscreen print making, stamping, acrylic paint, water paint and more, thrown into one layered piece of art. Try your hand at printing and learn secrets to create an amazing work of art that is pure fun and exploratory.  The old saying, “there are no mistakes in art” will shine through in this class.  Finished piece will be on a 10 x 10 board.    
All supplies included, **but please bring in any special paper, old books or other special pieces that you would like to incorporate.  Xerox copies (or any laser copy) of images are also encouraged.
This is a fun project as an inspirational board too!

If you are a complete beginner looking to learn pottery on the wheel, or have limited experience throwing, was scared or failed in high school, this is the workshop for you! In these 2 half-day sessions Studio 4 Art will show you tricks to create pots successfully.  You will learn how to throw and trim pots (plates, bowls and mugs) so you can take home functional pottery to use.  So rewarding, calming and tapping into new creative elements always feels good.

Screen Printing; 14-Adult
Create your own graphics for t-shirt design using simple and affordable screen printing techniques. This process allows individuals to make fun, pop-art style images. At the end of the session, you will be able to take your screen home and print your image on virtually any surface! **Studio 4 Art will have all supplies.  We do highly recommend that you bring in a picture to get you started.

Zine book of celebration, peace and light; 11-17
An in-depth exploration of creativity and art through zine making. This workshop will teach how to make your very own pocket zine, a small handmade book that explores identity through connections to nature, art and notions of self. Self expression in writing, the use of old books, printmaking, drawing, collage, and acrylic paints will be used in the transformation of paper into visually stimulating zine making.  Focus for this workshop will be about self, family, tradition, community, peace and the celebration of light.  **poems are wonderful to bring to place into your book.

Thanksgiving platters; Adult
Learning to work from clay in it’s raw state, rolling it out (slabs), then putting clay onto a slump mold (the thing that gives it shape), following through with added embellishing to the final touch of glazing.   The end results are a platter created with your own hands that will hold many wonderful family memories.  Teaching elements of clay, surface design techniques, and use of tools will all be covered.

Our Annual Gingerbread House Workshop; 7+ (children younger are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult)

The cost covers all supplies, tools, instructions, and enough clay to build a 9-11" tall clay gingerbread house, and an additional visit to the studio for glazing (at the customer's convenience). Families may work together (2 people per house is usually a good number), or build several to create a village!  Last year we even had a gingerbread church built.

Ornament Making
Come in anytime December 10th and Studio 4 Art will have your pound of clay ready to create ornaments for the holidays.  It is also a great time to make gift tags out of clay, super cute and different.  All ages welcome, children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult.  One pound of clay can create 8-14 ornaments, depending on the size of each.
