Creativity and Contemporary Art at Studio 4 Art

Creativity can be learned.  Creativity is opening up the mind to possibilities and to challenge what has been accomplished before.  Change is celebrated and failure is not negative, as it is looked at as a lesson learned, and a place to grow.   Compassion, diversity, understanding and acceptance.  All of these are traits I find and accentuate on in our classes, camps and even birthday parties through the studio.  Creativity is not thinking like the next person, it is a celebration of uniqueness.

Below are just some examples of how we are challenging some traditional techniques with a fun spin to create thoughtful, Contemporary art.  There are also lessons on taking a traditional application and adding an element that has not been explored before.

------------------
Contour self portraits printmaking, a new approach to examining oneself in a mirror.  The lesson started by viewing ourselves on a mirror, drawing over what was reflected.  The mirror is laid flat on the table.  Taking a water soluble oil pastel, trace the features of the face, and the hairline.  Once lines are drawn, take a saturated wet piece of paper.  Place it on top of the water based oil pastel, rub hands on the surface and then lift, revealing your contour portrait.  Each camper traced 3 different images of themselves, overlapping them in some way.  Colors were of personal choice.  Lastly, each artist then chose if their piece could be enhanced by adding just a bit of water paints in one common area.

------------------
Studio 4 Art loves printmaking.  Here campers created a screen print that was then incorporated onto a slabbed piece of clay.  Campers were introduced to foreground, background, pattern, color and silhouette and contour line.  Their background was composed of pattern and color.  We talked about dynamic patterns, and patterns that would allow our image to "pop" off the clay.  For screen printing with our students, we use a water proof glue, curtain sheers (from a local recycling center) and an embroidery hoop (that is used over and over again).  Completely non-toxic and green.  *the first 2 images are before they are fired, and the second 2 are after firing.

------------------
I love experimenting!  I have been reading a lot on gelatin prints and decided to give it a try.  It was a great way to introduce layering to our campers.  Playing with colors going from dark to light and light to dark and the effect of each.  Colorful layers could be put on with a brush or a printing brayer, each creating their own texture.  The kids LOVED it.  The feeling of the gelatin was of course a hit, but the overall experience and the ability to experiment just to see what was going to happen was a true hit.  A great element of surprise.

------------------
Mobiles!  Creating items in 2 dimensional form, then turning them into hanging sculptures, is a lot of fun.  Organic shapes cut out, line drawing with sharpie to create visual texture, finishing with some water paints for lots of color.   Then learning how to work with wire and all of their shapes to create a balanced art piece.

------------------
In our textile design class, we had our students learn how to machine sew, but they also got the chance to design their own Studio 4 Art shirt.  Campers in our summer textile camp become designers through learning to draw clothes draped over a figure, how color affects an outfit, different types of fabric and their make-up.  We discuss how fabric is made as well, whether it is from a natural material (such as cotton), or if it is composed of recycled material (such as fleece).

------------------
For the love of color and a zing of imagery.  Here are campers that are creating a background with primary colors.  Pattern was discussed as organic and geometric.  Primary colors were used and brush technique and control were taught.  This was a little Keith Herring inspired work.  Not shown, campers also sketched each other in a pose that implied movement.  The pose(s) of their choice along with art that communicated a positive message was added on top of their patterned background.

Contemporary art highlights many of the things that are happening in today's world, through observation, awareness and participation. This is just one of the reasons Studio 4 Art is focusing more on Contemporary art.  We want our students to become aware of the world they live in and to apply themselves to creating a better world not only for themselves, but for those that come after them too.
------------------
Creating a sketch before an actual project, is practiced regularly.  It allows to brainstorm ideas, to get the mind working in a creative way, working out some of the problems that may occur, allow focus and attention to detail.  It also grants students of all ages to know that sketching is a place to "mess up" and to think our ideas through.  No erasing is necessary (although surely okay) because they are not meant to frame, to put into a museum or art gallery.  As our campers get older, their judgments on themselves become more critical, forgetting to just let go, to explore and to play.  We hope that we are teaching them at this stage, to go back to playing for that is the place of discovery and wonder.

Campers on this day were designing finger puppets that were later made out of clay.  They each made three to help with stories to be told later in a puppet performance.

Hand sewing.  Nothing like the finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination and focus.  Our students and campers create their own patterns, and in this camp the theme was animals.  Animals are left up to their interpretation.  And yes, boys love it too.  After all, most of our famous designers are men, right?

Keeping you up to date

A time line of photos showing the awesomeness that has been happening in the studio.  I continue to be inspired and love the challenge of creating thought provoking curriculum.
Created with Kindergarten students.  Forest houses!  This project will also become a part of our Outdoor Art Camp.  Pinch pot tops, with slabbed bottom structure.  Bottom part of the mushroom houses were leatherhard so that the students could carve and detail without it collapsing.
Lots of art workshops even through the summer!  For Teens and adults.  The work that is created in these mini sessions are fun yet produce work that is very professional and will inspire you to keep creating.  Taught by working, professional artists.  Wheel throwing, Book making, Screen printing for t-shirts, and Zine making.
This was created by one of our adult drawing students.  Our adult classes are very flexible to fit into busy schedules.  8 card class passes are good for an entire year.  She has never taken a drawing class before and was inspired to add an additional element to her journal entries.  She is a writer and published author and has loved seeing her progress (as have I).   Love the expression of her fabulous dog (pencil on paper).  Learning how to train the eye is taught even with our littlest students.  Each new session working on something that intrigues our eyes and stimulates our mind.
Sewing!  Who wouldn't want to add this to their basket of talents.  Sewing classes are year around, with the special addition during the summer of Fashion Design Camp.  Two different sessions available.  In class and in camp students learn to machine sew, design patterns, work on personal projects, and above all gain confidence to create!   For ages 7 and up.
After School Enrichment art classes have finished for the 2012-2013 school year.  We will be back at it again in August, coming to over 12 different schools.  So honored that Studio 4 Art is found as an educational and professional organization that can bring quality art sessions into schools.

Pictured here is a student who has painted his background and after mixing the skin tone, is painting the shape of the head....all with his fingers.  This class is offered for students, grades 1-5, and I find it important to go back and remember what it feels like to play.  They were later painted with brushes when we were doing more intricate work on the portraits themselves.  They had a blast.
Studio 4 Art sponsors at least 2 free art days a year.  This was a part of the Art, Wine and Music Festival in Novato.  My favorite quote of the day, "Wheel throwing has been on my bucket list for years, so happy I can check it off.  Thank you!"
Lino cut prints.  The process has a zen quality to it.  From sketching your design, to transferring it to your linoleum plate and especially with the carving.  But the true reward, the magic of the print.  Printmaking classes offer this as one of the techniques learned.  We also have workshops!

This will be a part of the Mixed Media Camp.  I think we may print them on t-shirt to show them off.
Bisque ware is available at Studio 4 Art.  You can come in a paint a piece any time we are open; M-F 10:00-5:30 and Saturday from 10:00-2:00.  This piece warmed my heart.  It was created by the child's hand and her thumbprint.  Then outlined with one of our glaze pencils.  So sweet.
One of our own teachers was in a show recently.  It sponsored up and coming artists in the bay area.  This piece is one of my favorites, although it is difficult to photograph, the process is layers of photographs, printed on transparency's.  He has bolted them together with space in between to give depth and also adding a bit of ghostly quality to them.  Artist: Jenson Neugebauer
Our first week of summer camp.  These young artists were looking at trees to sketch to become inspiration for our later project in clay.  They were looking for the width of trunks, how many branches they saw, the outer shape of the tree (contour line), how to create so many leaves in one drawing and the texture they saw on the trunks.  Observational drawing at its finest.
When we closed our eyes and imagined ourselves as trees with a background that symbolized our favorite time of day, this is what happened in our Clay Play fine art camp.  Love, love, love.   The process was of visualization, inward perspective, and painting on clay as a canvas.  Summer camps, art work that is above and beyond.

Encaustics are still a mystery to many.  I have been painting with wax for about 5 years now (first learning the process in college) and have enjoyed sharing my experience with our students.  The scent and sensation of painting with melted wax is like no other.  It is great for many, many reasons; laying in words and poems to work, layering in handmade paper, mixed media art pieces, for those that like to carve, and especially for those that enjoy the creative process.  It is a medium that allows you to just let go and have fun.  Truly.  It is a wonderful medium if you love scrapbooking too!  Encaustics is available in a weekly class, workshops throughout the year and will be a part of our Teens ONLY camp.

ZOOLICIOUS! Camp

June 25-29

August 27-31 (different techniques and projects from first week)

Different animal theme and materials, everyday!  Painting, ceramics, drawing, sewing and mixed media explored.

Step 1 and 2: Creating a cone from a hunk of clay.  Then carving out center so that it is not too thick and won't explode in the kiln.

Step 3:  Smoothing the hollowed cone shaped form out on the outside.

Step 4:  Creating your own animal by attaching on head, limbs, tail, ears etc. to your original hollowed cone shape.

Step 5: Once everything is attached, smoothed, secure and hollow, time for underglaze.
All of the pieces created in Zoolicious! clay exploration, were unique to each of the individual artists.  Campers used their creative problem solving skills to: shape a cone, hollow out the form, design a head from a pinch pot, and decide on dimensions and shapes of legs, feet, tails, eyes and ears.  There was a lot of team work involved when brainstorming the best solutions to each step.

Acrylic painting on canvas.  First designing and sketching were important before campers moved onto painting.  Once their sketch was what their mind saw, we began the process of painting with layers, proper brush size, color mixing (we mix all of our colors from the primary colors, black and white), and how to use a brush appropriate and effectively.
ZOOLICIOUS!
Friends coming into the camp.  The camper on the right first came to Studio 4 Art when she was 4!

New found friends.  Love their paintings.  It is great when they can paint objects that they love.  That love is then transferred into their work!

Brothers!

Finger puppet free choice time.  Sewing, ceramics, painting and mosaics are all a part of free choice time.  This always happens after our warm up project of the day.

When a 5 year old boy can learn to design, cut, sew buttons and sew a seam, I get extremely happy!  And the fact that it is my son, extremely proud!

Many steps were taken before this Eric Carlisle inspired mixed media piece come to be.

Mixed media piece.  So complete, with the details of the underground environment and the character of these wolves.

Step 1: We begin the process by freely creating sheets of acrylic painted paper.

In the first step, artists are beginning to create freely, while learning about visual texture, coloring mixing a pallet of monochromatic colors, hues and values using blacks and whites.

Step 2: Begin to create an environment for your animal.  This step is first designed in pencil, then traced with a sharpie.
Beginning step 2 with a pencil that is then traced with a sharpie builds the eye hand coordination that is essential to drawing, painting, sculpting and all sports!  Other things talked about were; what is an environment, what is a horizon line, perspective and scale.

Step 3: Once traced, it is time to add color with water paints.  The water paints that Studio 4 Art uses are not going to be Crayola.  We use a high grade, heavy pigmented water paint.  Huge difference for the kids because they don't have to "scrub" the paint to get color, they simple dab.

Step 4: Using scissors to cut out our animals.  Looking at shape, size, and details needed.
Always so colorful, whimsical and fun!
