Clay Play! Camp

June 18-22

July 23-27 (new projects and techniques!)

All ceramics will be explored; wheel throwing, sculpture, mugs, plates, bowls!

This reads: I love, enjoy, devoure, adore, and will never stop doing art!!!!  I hope she is looking forward to being Studio 4 Art's marketing department.
Clay play is always enjoyed by young and old.  Our philosophy in this camp is all about personal style and ideas.  In the beginning of each day, we introduce a new technique or approach in using clay, along with a challenge to build on the creative process.
What can you create with a boxed, hollow form?
The above picture does not show scale, these were created by using a tile as a template, 4x4 and 2x2.  From robots, to mice to jewelry and treasure boxes, all individually unique!  It is our style, no two should be alike, because we are all different!

The Last of 2010

The month of December made everyone smile at Studio 4 Art. The studio was bustling with workshops, drop-in's, classes, camps and people looking for art supplies, craft kits and gift certificates for stocking stuffers. Busy and fun by all!

This student was thrilled when she was finally old enough to learn the machine. There is nothing stopping her now!

Learning to sew from a pattern is just as important as learning to create your own pattern. Once you understand how a pattern is created, creating your own opens a new creative door!

This older sister was thrilled to show her little sister how the potter's wheel works. She was so patient and made sure to share the step-by-step "how to's."

I am so excited when businesses of downtown Novato use our facility. This beautiful bowl was created by the owner of DayDreams. She put so much love and whimsy into this popcorn bowl made for her husband. It doesn't show it so well in this photo, but it is a BIG bowl. Thanks for coming in!

This was one of the last camps of 2010. Studio 4 Art hosts camps every school break. In Marin, that is almost every month (as a mom, I can't believe how many breaks there are and how difficult it is to juggle the time off). The linoleum blocks (above) that the campers carved turned out so fantastic. I really wanted to keep them all to print on bags, shirts and cards. Unfortunately, they liked them just as much and took them home.

Our next week is in February for Ski Week. I would personally rather be in our studio creating than freezing on the slopes :)

Our last workshop of 2010 was a mosaic planter. These girls were using plates, bowls and tea cup chinaware that had been donated to the studio. Whenever we have fellow artists donate their unwanted materials, it opens our doors to beautiful work.

What a year we have had. SO excited, thrilled, surprised and astonished at how our studio has grown. And just think, we continue to grow and to add more. In 2011 we are adding oil painting and encaustic painting, to our venue and TONS of DIY workshops for all ages!

Art from Summer Art Camps and Drop-In Studio

  • Art Camps
  • Free Choice
  • Art Bags
  • Drop-in/Drop-off
  • Pottery

"Eat a still-life"
camp was a great success. Everyday students would explore yummy treats through drawing, paint and clay.

Students trained their artist eye to see details that the eye may not have seen before while observing their still-life. For acrylic paintings students matched their cupcake, mixing primary colors to create brown, pink, orange, green, magenta, and more.

Discussing the layering of color, negative space and composition students went on to create a watercolor paintings.

Clay was also involved in this mouth watering still-life experience. Having a heaping plate of donuts... astonishing focus for students to get involved with their art. Anticipating indulgence in their art experience.

These are the results of our donuts. Look good enough to eat, but don't, you may break a tooth. Fooled many customers, all wondering if Studio 4 Art was now serving treats.

Recycle, Reuse, Re-purpose Camp.

This camp was great to see the kids explore. Having canisters, cans, boxes, plastics and computer parts to work into designing a sculpture. Once the armature was finished the sculptures were then covered with plaster. The final element was the fun of paint with splatters, blotches, spots and stripes.

Puppet Camp

Drawing their idea, sewing, creating in clay and learning the proportion of the face was our focus. I think these finger puppets showed the diversity, uniqueness and creativity that continues to be the spirit of our studio.

Portrait below is our study of the face. Looking in a mirror, learning how to measure for features, the importance of shape and line, created this expressive piece. Also, in action sewer, stitching his creature.

Art Bags

Every Friday is create your own recyclable art bag. Something for our students to bring all of their art goodies home in. This was an exploration in screen-printing. Also pictured is my handy, creative, beautiful, amazing, instructor and daughter, Jenessa. Thanks for all of your hard work so far J!!

This was another Friday Art Bag...this time using a printing plate. Kids had fun putting it through our printing press. This print was created by a soon to be Kindergarten student. Too cool!

Free Choice.

Our camps are designed so that children have an educational, group activity for the first hour to exercise their minds. After that hour the studio is open to explore and create whatever and with whatever materials each child wants.

It is so fun to have both available. After our first hour we will have a few kids painting, a few kids sculpting, a few kids on the wheel and usually a few sewing. The studio becomes ALIVE with creative energy!

Drop-in/Drop-off

Summer Hours for drop-in/drop-off are from 2:00-6:00 Monday-Friday and Saturday from 3:00-6:00. Remember we have air conditioning for those hot Summer days.

This painting was for a mom on her birthday. Exploring color and the stroke of a brush made for a wonderful present. (age 5)

Pottery

Our potter's wheels are for those with experience and for those that don't have any. Come in and have a messy, muddy, although relaxing time. Items made on a wheel could be cups, mugs, bowls, plates, platters, vases, tea pots and any other round object.

Creative Chaos

My husband and I recently went to Monterey Bay for a week-end away (which was marvelous). We began to talk about creative things we love to do. I have so many interests that my brain began to fill with creative chaos. But, what we discovered is that we both have an interest in creating a pottery line....together. We decided on the name M/F. What this refers to is masculine and feminine. As individuals we both are talking a lot about the differences between men and women and discovered through conversation that this can even apply to pottery.

As a start, my end of this design team is going to be thin, colorful, and organic in shape. I want my forms to be really basic in form, but detailed in design. That will assist the masculine side that will be thicker, more neutral in color, and very methodical and predictable in shape (my hus
band is excited to mathematically use equations to render the line of dinnerware). But together they harmonize each other and create a distinctive and unique set of dishes and accessories.

I thought I would share what I have done so far. I am using some vintage bowls of my Great Grandmothers and bowls that were made as wedding favors. I was a lucky participant in helping to throw 150 bowls for the wedding, it was great fun! I enjoy the idea of using things that have a great memory to them already.

I have applied a few different slip designs to them t
hat I will post after I fire them and take some photos.
